z/OS® on a personal computer or workstation Linux environment…really? Really (sorry, no production workloads please). IBM’s z Development & Test (zD&T) solution includes not only the z/OS operating system but most other IBM mainframe software, including their Monthly License Charge (MLC) stack. Most ISVs will provide their software as well. This service creates an environment for mainframe application demonstration, development, testing, and employee education without Z mainframe hardware. It enables z/OS, middleware, and other z/OS software to run on Intel and other compatible computers and emulates z/Architecture with virtual I/O and devices. It is not just about lowering the development cost on the mainframe, which it will, but about freeing the developers from system programmer resource constraints. If your CPU is running at or near capacity and you are looking at a potential expensive CPU consider offloading your developer work to a workstation to put off that upgrade, perhaps indefinitely. My partner in this space has many years and many satisfied customers implementing and supporting z/OS implementations on X86.
