There are application discovery products available for purchase, requiring a capital investment and a long-term commitment. IBM’s ADDI comes to mind. Only one is available as a service and affordably priced for project use. In fact, my partner’s product is used by IBM’s Global Technology Services (GTS) for the discovery phase of their code modification engagements and claims it reduces by 85% the time and labor required for that discovery phase. This service can be used for legacy application code discovery such as COBOL, CICS, PL/1, Natural, Easytrieve etc. and distributed languages such as Java, .NET, C++, Python, Script Languages, etc., and all artifacts including JCL, RDBMS’s, Software Configuration Managers, Batch Schedulers, Frameworks, etc. If you have a project coming up to modernize code, whether mainframe or distributed, make sure you do a complete and automated discovery before you begin.
